If you’ll split up, everyone needs their own eSIM or SIM.

Does anyone need a laptop or tablet online? If yes, pocket WiFi or an eSIM plan that allows hotspot use.

eSIM in Japan: Best for Most Solo Travelers

An eSIM is the least hassle for one person with a modern phone. There is nothing to pick up, nothing to charge, and nothing to send back on your last morning.

How a Travel eSIM Works

You buy a plan online, scan a QR code or tap “install” in the provider’s app, and your phone adds a second line. When you land, you switch your data to that line. Each company rides on one of Japan’s big networks: Airalo uses SoftBank, for example, and Ubigi uses docomo.

Install it the night before you fly, at home on your own Wi-Fi. People who wait until the arrivals hall often end up fighting the airport Wi-Fi login page with a queue for passport control behind them. If the eSIM is already on your phone, you just turn it on when the plane lands.

What We Saw in Our Tokyo & Osaka Tests

In our earlier eSIM tests, Ubigi passed 120Mbps on 5G in the middle of Shibuya Crossing, which is about as crowded as a mobile network gets. Airalo and Saily stayed around 80–100Mbps in the same spot. In Dotonbori in Osaka, video calls home ran without freezing. On the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka, the signal dropped in mountain tunnels and came back within a few seconds of leaving them.

That’s more than enough for maps, translation apps and social media. The full results and our provider picks are in Best eSIM for Japan Travel: Real Speed Tests in Tokyo & Osaka.

Downsides to Know Before You Buy

Your phone must be unlocked and support eSIM. Phones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau are often dual physical-SIM models with no eSIM. Carrier-locked phones won’t accept another company’s eSIM at all.

Travel eSIMs are data only. You get no Japanese phone number. Messaging apps work fine, but a restaurant that insists on calling you back will need another number.

“Unlimited” has fine print. Saily‘s unlimited Japan plan, for instance, runs at full speed for 5GB a day and then slows to about 1Mbps. We earn a commission if you buy through these links.

Pocket WiFi in Japan: Best for Families and Groups

A pocket WiFi is a small router you rent for the trip. One device can serve several phones, tablets and laptops, so the more people share it, the cheaper it gets per person.

How Renting a Pocket WiFi Works

You reserve online, then collect the router at an airport counter or locker, or have it delivered to your hotel. To return it, most companies give you a prepaid envelope you drop in a postbox. Japan Wireless asks you to post it by 15:00 the day after your rental ends, and airport postboxes count (Japan Wireless: How to Rent). Some airports also have return boxes at the rental counters.

The Hassles Nobody Mentions

Rental sites show you the daily price. They spend less time on what it’s like to live with the router for a week.

Someone has to charge it every night and remember to bring it every morning. Forget it at the hotel and the whole group is offline until you go back.

The group can’t split up. If one person goes to the anime shops in Akihabara while the others head to Asakusa, whoever doesn’t hold the router has no data.

Losing it is expensive. Without protection, Japan Wireless charges ¥40,000 for a lost router and SIM, and ¥700 per device per day for late returns from the third day (Japan Wireless terms). NINJA WiFi also lists ¥40,000 for a lost router (NINJA WiFi plans).

Check the data rules. Plans sold as “unlimited” are not all the same. NINJA WiFi’s “5GB/day” plans drop to 128kbps once you pass the daily amount, while its “Infinite Unlimited” plan has no cap but may slow down at busy times.

When Pocket WiFi Clearly Wins

Pocket WiFi makes sense for a family of three or more who travel as one unit, for business travelers who need a laptop online all day, and for groups where somebody’s phone is locked. Japan Wireless also includes a power bank with its unlimited plan, which takes care of part of the charging problem.

Airport SIM Cards: The Backup Plan at Narita, Haneda & Kansai

A physical SIM is mainly for people whose phone can’t use an eSIM. You can buy one right after landing, and the main airports also have 24-hour vending machines.

Who Should Buy a Physical SIM

If your phone is unlocked but has no eSIM support, a SIM card is the simplest fix. The SoftBank Prepaid SIM sold at airport counters, for example, costs ¥5,720 for 10GB over 10 days or ¥6,600 for 10GB over 20 days (SoftBank Global Rental). Like most tourist SIMs, it’s data only, with no phone number and no top-up. Sakura Mobile’s travel SIMs are also data only (Sakura Mobile).

Keep your home SIM in a safe place, such as taped inside your passport cover. Tiny SIM cards get lost in hotel rooms all the time.

Narita Airport (NRT)

Narita has rental WiFi and SIM counters in Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, all before security. Most staffed counters, including XCom Global, J WiFi & Mobile, Telecomsquare and SoftBank Global Rental, open 07:00–21:00. The JAL ABC counter on 1F of Terminals 1 and 2 opens at 06:30 and stays open until an hour after the last international flight. GPA SIM vending machines run 24 hours in all three terminals. Terminal 3, the budget-airline terminal, has a J WiFi & Mobile counter on 1F (07:00–21:00) and a 24-hour SIM vending machine (Narita Airport: Rental Wi-Fi & SIM).

Haneda Airport (HND)

Most international flights use Terminal 3. On the 2F arrivals floor, the Mobile Center run by Telecom Square opens 6:30–23:00 and has a 24-hour unmanned WiFi rental machine out front. AnyFone JAPAN (SoftBank) opens 6:00–23:00 for rentals and prepaid SIMs. On the 3F departures floor, the Mobile Center (6:30–23:00) and XCom Global (6:30–22:30) also have counters (Haneda Airport: Mobile Phone Rental).

Kansai Airport (KIX)

Terminal 1, 1F has GLOBAL WiFi, Telecom Square and Sakura Mobile counters, mostly 06:00–23:00. The same floor has 24-hour SIM vending machines, GLOBAL WiFi pickup lockers, WiFiBOX machines, and 24-hour return boxes for JAL ABC and JAPAN WiFi (XCom). Terminal 2, used by low-cost carriers, has a GLOBAL WiFi counter (07:00–21:30) plus 24-hour WiFiBOX machines and a SIM vending machine (Kansai Airport: Rental Wi-Fi & SIM).

Landing Late at Night? What to Do

Late arrivals are where travelers get stuck. At Narita, most staffed counters close at 21:00. Haneda and Kansai stay open until about 23:00. If your flight lands close to midnight, use one of these:

An eSIM installed before you left. Nothing depends on opening hours.

24-hour machines. SIM vending machines at Narita and Kansai, the WiFi rental machine at Haneda Terminal 3, and pickup lockers at Kansai. Choice is smaller than at the counters.

The airport’s free Wi-Fi to get to your hotel: “FreeWiFi-NARITA”, “HANEDA-FREE-WIFI” and “#AirportFreeWiFi-Kansai”. No registration is needed; you accept the terms on a connection page. Narita’s own page recommends using a VPN on it (Narita Airport: Free Wi-Fi).

Cost Comparison: Solo, Couple and Family of Four

Per person, an eSIM is cheapest for one or two people. Once three or four of you share one pocket WiFi, the router costs less per person. That’s $84 for a week, against $17–27 for an eSIM. Some T-Mobile plans include a set amount of high-speed data abroad, such as 15GB on Experience Beyond, so check your own plan first (T-Mobile). For carrier-by-carrier costs and how to keep your US number while using an eSIM, see Will My US Phone Work in Japan?

A lot of travelers combine the two: they keep their home line on for texts and two-factor codes and use an eSIM for data.

FAQ

Can I use a travel eSIM and still get texts on my home number?

Yes, if your phone supports two lines. Keep your home line on for calls and texts, set the eSIM as your data line, and turn off data roaming on the home line so you aren’t charged for data. Your carrier may still charge for calls and texts received abroad.

Does pocket WiFi work on the Shinkansen and in the countryside?

In cities and along the main Shinkansen lines, yes. Expect short drops in tunnels, the same as with an eSIM. In the mountains, coverage depends more on the network than on the device. docomo is generally strongest in rural areas, so for skiing or hiking trips look for a router or eSIM that uses docomo.

Do I need a Japanese phone number as a tourist?

Usually not. Hotels, trains and most apps work with an email address or your home number. A few restaurant booking and delivery services ask for a Japanese number. In those cases your hotel can often book for you.

Is the free public Wi-Fi in Japan good enough on its own?

Not for getting around. Airports, many stations and convenience stores offer free Wi-Fi, but you lose it as soon as you walk away, which is exactly when you need maps. It works as a backup, not as your main connection.

What happens if I forget to return the pocket WiFi?

Late fees start to add up, and after a while the router is treated as lost. Japan Wireless, for example, charges ¥40,000 if a router is still not returned 10 days after the rental ends. Drop the envelope in the airport postbox before security on your way out.

Our Recommendation

Here is what we tell friends coming to visit us in Japan. Traveling alone or as a couple with unlocked phones: get an eSIM and install it before you leave. Family of three or more who stay together, or bringing a laptop: rent a pocket WiFi. Phone without eSIM: buy a SIM at the airport, and if you land late, head for the 24-hour machines.

If you’ve settled on an eSIM, these are the providers we use and recommend. We earn a commission if you buy through these links, at no extra cost to you.

Saily

Global connectivity in 190 countries with 24/7 expert support.

Get online instantly: One-click setup via our dedicated app.

    Get Started

<a href=https://en.sni-hub.com/vpn/holafly-a" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold; color: #1a0dab; text-decoration: underline;">Holafly

Effortlessly manage your global data anywhere with the Holafly app.

Save 5% instantly with exclusive code: "VPNLIFE"

    Get Started

<a href=https://en.sni-hub.com/vpn/airalo-a" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold; color: #1a0dab; text-decoration: underline;">Airalo

Stay connected in 200+ regions with flexible local, global, and unlimited plans.

Limited Time Offer: Enjoy an exclusive 10% discount!

    Get Started

For speed test details and a provider-by-provider comparison, read Best eSIM for Japan Travel.

VPN Connectivity Testing in Asia by VPN Life

VPN Life is operated by members of SNI who possess extensive experience living and conducting business abroad.
