Verizon, AT&T & T-Mobile vs a Japan eSIM (2026 Costs)

Yes. If you’re on a postpaid Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile plan, your phone will almost certainly work in Japan the moment you land. The question is the bill. Verizon and AT&T charge $12 a day, which comes to $84 for a one-week trip. For anything longer than a few days, keeping your US number for calls and texts and putting your data on a Japan eSIM usually costs a fraction of that.

VPN Life is run by SNI, a joint venture of two Japanese companies, Water X Technologies and New Connections, and we do business in Japan every day. We haven’t measured roaming speeds on US carriers ourselves, so every price and data allowance below comes from the carriers’ own websites, checked on October 1, 2026.

Planning to switch your data to an eSIM? Japan is a TravelPass country, and Verizon also offers a monthly international plan and pay-as-you-go rates.

TravelPass: $12 a Day

TravelPass costs $12 a day in Japan. Each 24-hour session gives you your usual talk and text plus 5GB of high-speed data, then unlimited data at 3G speeds until the session ends (Verizon TravelPass FAQs). You’re only charged on days you actually use the phone abroad, so a 7-day trip with daily use costs $84 and 14 days costs $168.

International Monthly Plan: $100

For longer trips, the International Monthly Plan is $100 per line per month (plus taxes and fees). It includes 20GB of high-speed data, unlimited texts and 250 minutes of calls, with extra minutes at $0.25 (Verizon International Monthly Plan). It starts to beat TravelPass at around nine days. Verizon’s page lists “210+ countries” without naming each one, so confirm Japan in the My Verizon app before you rely on it.

How TravelPass Charges Can Sneak Up on You

A TravelPass session starts automatically the first time you make or answer a call, send a text, or use data. Background data counts too: app refreshes, email syncing and software updates can all start the day’s $12 (Verizon TravelPass FAQs). The common surprise is a phone left on with cellular data enabled on a “rest day” spent on hotel Wi-Fi. That still counts as a day of use.

To avoid it, keep cellular data and data roaming switched off on your Verizon line, and use Wi-Fi Calling for calls home. Verizon says Wi-Fi calls to US numbers from abroad come at no additional cost (Verizon International Travel FAQs). Without TravelPass, though, pay-as-you-go rates apply: received texts are $0.05 each and sent texts $0.50 each (Verizon pay-as-you-go).

Does AT&T Work in Japan?

Yes. AT&T’s International Day Pass covers more than 210 destinations, and AT&T’s own Japan travel guide confirms the $12 daily rate there.

International Day Pass: $12 a Day

Day Pass is $12 a day for the first line, plus $6 for each additional line on the same account used that calendar day. It includes talk, text and high-speed data (AT&T International Day Pass). AT&T also never charges more than 10 daily fees per line in one bill period, which helps on long trips (AT&T support).

For a family of four on one account, a day of use costs $12 + $6 + $6 + $6 = $30. A week adds up to $210. Four 10GB eSIMs for the same week cost $68.

Avoiding Surprise Day Pass Charges

The 24-hour period starts the first time you use data, send a text, or make or accept a call. Texts you receive are rated as domestic and don’t trigger the daily fee. AT&T’s own advice for avoiding charges is to put the phone in airplane mode and turn on Wi-Fi, and to watch for apps using data in the background. Wi-Fi calls to the US are free, but a Wi-Fi call to a number outside the US will start the daily fee (AT&T support).

Does T-Mobile Work in Japan?

Yes, and many T-Mobile customers already have some data included. How much depends on your plan.

What Your Plan Already Includes

スクロールできます

T-Mobile plan

Data in Japan

Texts

Calls

Better Value plans

30GB high-speed, then 256kbps

Unlimited

$0.50/min

Experience Beyond, Go5G Next

15GB, then 256kbps

Unlimited

$0.50/min

Experience More, Go5G Plus, Magenta MAX, One Plus

5GB, then 256kbps

Unlimited

$0.50/min

Go5G, Magenta, One

Unlimited at 256kbps

Unlimited

$0.50/min

Essentials

None (buy a pass)

Free

$0.50/min

Source: T-Mobile international roaming: Japan. Calls you answer are charged per minute too. A missed call that goes to voicemail is billed as one minute if your phone is on.

256kbps is slow. It’s roughly enough for text messages and a map that loads one piece at a time. Photos take a while to send, and video calls won’t work well. Treat it as a safety net, not your main connection.

International Pass: When the Included Data Runs Out

T-Mobile sells passes for Japan in the T-Life app or at My.T-Mobile.com: 1 day with 512MB for $5, 10 days with 15GB for $50, and 30 days with 30GB for $75, all with unlimited calling. Wi-Fi calls to US numbers are free (T-Mobile Japan page). T-Mobile prepaid plans don’t include international data roaming.

Roaming vs a Japan eSIM: The Real Cost

For one person on Verizon or AT&T, a week of roaming costs about five times as much as a 10GB eSIM. With a family plan the gap gets wider. T-Mobile is the exception: if your plan includes 15GB or 30GB, you may not need anything extra.

スクロールできます

7-day trip

Verizon TravelPass

AT&T Day Pass

Japan eSIM (10GB)

Japan eSIM (unlimited)

1 person

$84

$84

$17

$26.50

2 people

$168

$126

$34

$53

4 people

$336

$210

$68

$106

eSIM prices are Airalo Japan plans (10GB/7 days $17, unlimited 7 days $26.50), checked October 1, 2026 on the official Airalo Japan page. The table assumes every line is used every day. One thing roaming doesn’t cost you is your number, but an eSIM doesn’t either, as the next section shows.

How to Keep Your US Number and Use an eSIM for Data

Most recent iPhones and Pixels can run two lines at once. You keep your US line for calls and texts and send all data through the eSIM. Install the eSIM at home before you fly, and do the steps below on the plane or right after landing. If you haven’t picked one yet, Saily, Airalo and Holafly all sell Japan plans (affiliate links).

On iPhone

STEP

Set your US line as the voice line

Go to Settings > Cellular > Default Voice Line and choose your US number.

STEP

Put data on the eSIM

Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and choose the Japan eSIM. Then open each SIM: turn Roaming on for the eSIM and off for your US line. On Pixel 8a and later, also check that “Automatic data switching” is off (Google Pixel Help). Samsung Galaxy phones have the same settings under Connections > SIM manager.

Will I Still Get Texts and 2FA Codes?

Yes. As long as your US line stays switched on, texts, including bank and two-factor codes, reach you in Japan. What you pay for them depends on the carrier. AT&T rates received texts as domestic. T-Mobile includes texting on its plans. On Verizon without TravelPass, each received text is $0.05. Sending a text from your US line abroad can start a Verizon TravelPass or AT&T Day Pass session, so reply through iMessage, WhatsApp or Wi-Fi Calling when you can.

When Sticking With Roaming Makes Sense

An eSIM isn’t always worth the setup. Roaming is a reasonable choice if:

You’re in Japan for two or three days on business and your work phone is locked down by IT

You’ll take many calls on your US number, and Day Pass or TravelPass includes them

You’re on a T-Mobile plan with 15GB or 30GB included and won’t use more

Your phone is locked to your carrier and can’t take an eSIM from another company

In those cases you’re paying for convenience, and that can be the right trade.

What We See in Japan as a Japan-Based Business

Doing business in Japan, we run into a few things that roaming guides written elsewhere tend to skip.

Japanese phone number fields. Some restaurant booking and delivery forms only accept a Japanese number. Mint Mobile sells short international passes, so check its site for current prices. Cricket’s international Passport doesn’t list Japan (Cricket country list). For most prepaid users, an eSIM is the simpler choice.

Our Recommendation

Staying three days or less, or can’t change your phone settings: roam and don’t worry about it.
